UPDATE-Bodies of two babies found in medical waste

Relevant News

The Limassol Crime Investigation Department is looking into a case of disposal of two babies’ bodies at Limassol Hospital’s medical waste area, Phileleftheros reports.

According to insider information, a company that collects medical waste from the Limassol hospital has discovered the bodies of two babies while conducting their duties.

Sources said that the babies were born dead and their parents agreed by signing a document that they did not want the bodies.

The bodies were then reportedly kept at the hospital’s morgue for months and were then discarded as medical waste as per the relevant protocol according to which dead babies younger than 22 weeks should be discarded while those above that time frame are kept in the morgue and buried with others if the parents don’t want the bodies.

The case is under investigation by the Limassol CID.

The State Health Services Organisation (SHSO) issued an announcement on the matter on Wednesday saying that the incident is under investigation by the Limassol Hospital management as well as the police.

“The SHSO is anticipating the outcome of both investigations,” it concluded.
