The two leaders are now obviously unable to go further in the process of discussing the Cyprus problem. This was confirmed at last night’s three-hour-long meeting between Nicos Anastasiades and Mustafa Akinci at Elizabeth Spehar’s house.
During the meeting it became clear that:
– the two sides remain immovable in their positions, as these were expressed during the negotiations at Crans Montana and during the following period.
– the two leaders do not wish for the process to reach a dead-end.
– there needs to be participation from the United Nations including the personal contribution of UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
– The appointment of a new Special envoy of the UN Secretary-General, who would be able to move between the two sides in an effort to put the process back on track, would be very helpful.
– The contribution of the Special envoy of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres is necessary, in order for Turkey to return to discussions, according to the formula followed at Crans Montana.
President Anastasiades stated that he is ready to resume the talks from the point in which they had ended last July at Crans Montana. Later he said that neither of the leaders would rule out the possibility that ‘the Secretary-General would want to send a Special envoy’ to investigate ‘the chances of resuming a dialogue based on parameters set by the Secretary-General’.
