Two riot police members to stand trial over “Os Dame” violent clashes

Relevant News

Two riot police officers will stand trial over the violent clashes with ‘’Os Dame’’ protesters in February last year that led to the serious eye injury of a young woman.

And this has stirred turmoil within the police force whose unions are objecting to the Attorney General’s decision, Philenews reported on Wednesday.

The criminal responsibilities were decided after the top legal office evaluated the report submitted by the Independent Authority for the Investigation of Allegations and Complaints Against the Police (IAIACAP).

The investigation had focused on the eye injury caused by police officers to a 25-year-old woman, as well as other citizen injuries.

Police had used a water cannon in an attempt to disperse the demonstration which went ahead after they had warned the ban on mass gatherings as part of the pandemic measures remained in place.

Nicosia anti-riot police members were so angry over the slapped criminal charges that they handed in their gear in solidarity with their colleagues. But they were soon convinced to take it back.
