Two remanded following discovery of 138 kilos of cannabis

Relevant News

Two men were remanded in custody by Limassol District Court for six days on Thursday following the discovery of cannabis plants and cannabis at a licensed hemp production unit in Pelendri.

Lawyers for the two men — the 32 year old licence-holder and a 36 year old worker — objected to the remand. The first questioned the samples taken by police. These had been tested and showed that they contained THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) above the permitted level of 0.2%. The second asked for the procedure to be delayed.

Drug squad police said they had placed the facilities at Pelendri under surveillance on Monday after a tip off that he was violating his hemp permit and was growing and selling drugs. They said that a total of 120 cannabis plants and 138 kilos of cannabis were found. A total of 18 samples were taken to determine whether these were in line with the permit as regards permissible levels of THC.

Results so far from the state lab for nine of these samples showed TBC levels of 2.3% to 5.66%.

Police are looking for a third person who is suspected of helping the 32 year old raise THC levels.

The suspect said that the cannabis found was from an older, defective batch while his lawyer argued that only officials from the Agriculture Ministry could take samples.

The court rejected a police request for eight days remand and ordered the two held in custody for six days.
