Nicosia Criminal Court on Wednesday handed down an eight and a 16 year sentence to two men found guilty of possessing 15 kilos of cocaine.

The first defendant, aged 36, was jailed for eight years and the second, aged 34, for twice that.

In passing sentence, the Criminal Court said that drugs were possibly one of the biggest problems facing young people, and have now spread elsewhere, including in the schools.

It added that the Supreme Court has repeatedly highlighted the need for tough sentences which will act as a deterrent to be given for drug related crimes.

The two men were arrested on January 16 after a tip off that their houses were being used to store, weigh and sell drugs.

The 36 year old was caught by police as he was leaving the house of the 34 year old holding a bag which contained 14 kilos of cocaine. Police then broke down the door of the house after the 34 year old refused to open. They found him on the balcony where he said: “I didn’t open because it’s cocaine and it’s mine.” He then handed over to police another kilo of cocaine that he had thrown into the neighbour’s garden.

Police who searched the house found €2,010, seven mobile phones, a lap top, a CCTV system and other items that were taken in as evidence.

During a search of the 36 year old man’s house, police found three mobile phones, two precision scales and other items that were also taken into evidence.
