Two jailed, two awaiting trial over Nicosia pub fire

The Nicosia Criminal Court jailed one man for eight years and the second for two for the manslaughter of a 38 year old woman from the Ukraine as a result of arson at a Nicosia pub.

The 32 year old Syrian was jailed for eight years for manslaughter and four for arson with the terms running concurrently.

A 21 year old Greek Cypriot was jailed for two yeas for conspiracy to commit an offence.

The Syrian had started the fire while the Greek Cypriot lent him a motorbike to get to the scene.

In handing down the sentence the court said that neither were the masterminds of the crime and said that both had contributed to resolving the case. Both pleaded guilty and the 32 year old may appear as a witness for the prosecution.

The fire at the Gosha Bar on Costakis Pantelides road near Eleftheria Square was deliberately started on January 30 leading to the death of the 38 year old Ukrainian woman who had arrived in Cyprus a few days earlier and was staying in one of the apartments on the first floor.

The 45 year old Greek Cypriot owner of the building and a non-Cypriot have pleaded not guilty and will stand trial on November 6.

They will remain in police custody until then.
