Nine days after the island’s traffic-cameras system formally went into operation all across Cyprus reported violations were cut in half, Philenews reported on Tuesday.
On December 31, the end of the pilot operation of eight traffic cameras – four fixed and four mobile – which started last October came to an end.
And those caught violating traffic regulations are now receiving fines and not just warning letters.
Specifically, during the nine days of operation of the four mobile cameras, 5,222 drivers were reported marking a reduction by more than half from the violations recorded when the system was operating on a trial basis.
The same seems to be the case with the four fixed cameras which record about 100 complaints a day which is a lot less than before.
The traffic-camera system includes 90 fixed cameras in 30 locations around the island to cover black spots on the road network.
As well as 20 mobile cameras which police will determine their location and operating hours on a daily basis.
