Traffic police to start using civilian cars

Relevant News

Traffic police will be equipped with civilian cars in order to arrest speeding drivers, Phileleftheros reported on Friday.

It said that police will acquire 12 high-speed cars, of which four do not bear police vehicle characteristics.

However, the officers who will be driving them will wear police uniform.

The cars will be used to catch speeding drivers, who now slow down when they see a police vehicle from afar and then accelerate again.

All the 12 cars will be equipped with automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), a technology that uses optical character recognition on images to read vehicle registration plates to create vehicle location data.

According to Phileleftheros, the cars will cost a total of €370,000.
