Traffic cameras network pays off, violations halved since they went ‘live’

Relevant News

Police are happy to see the traffic cameras network paying off considering that violations have dropped by half ever since the system went ‘live’ in Cyprus on January 1.

This is in comparison to the period during which they were used on a pilot basis, that is from October 25, 2021 to January 1, 2022.

Traffic cameras would record approximately 1,800 violations daily compared to around 900 a day now, deputy traffic chief Harris Evripidou told MPs on Thursday.

Nonetheless, violations recorded within just first 40 days of the system’s operation are over 30,000 and this is not a number not to be underestimated.

Evripidou said that when more cameras are installed then the out-of-court fines will become a mountain high and hard to be processed.

The fines are being sent by registered mail together with links and passwords to a website where offenders can see details of the traffic offence as well as photographs.

The fine must be paid within 30 days otherwise it will rise by half and must be paid within 45 days. If it is not paid by then, the case will be sent to court.
