Total of 943 drivers activate eCall service in past eight months

Relevant News

A total of 943 drivers in Cyprus activated the 112 eCall service from the beginning of the year till August 24, Philenews reported on Monday.

The 112 eCall automatically dials Europe’s single emergency number 112 in the event of a serious accident and communicates the vehicle’s location to the emergency services.

Most calls were recorded in March (144), February (138) and July (131).

In the case of serious accidents, the call is made automatically by means of the activation of in-vehicle sensors. All new vehicles must have these sensors, according to an EU regulation.

The 112 eCall is a “dormant” system, that is the eCall in-vehicle system is only active when an accident occurs or if it is manually triggered.

It is not traceable and when there is no emergency it is not subject to any constant tracking. As it is not permanently connected to mobile networks, hackers cannot take control of it.
