A study providing for the construction of 37 wave breakers all along the northern coastal front of Cyprus at a total cost of €12 million is currently under review.
The proposed area is about 25 km long, located between the rocky formations near Anassa Hotel in Asprokremmos within the district of Neo Chorio community and the eastern district of Pomos Bay and Pachyammos beach.
A large part of this area is where the two protected sea turtle species of the Mediterranean, Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas, hatch their eggs.
Existing natural and man-made environmental conditions as well as anticipated future ones, along with climate change, were taken into consideration when these projects were proposed.
The Strategic Environmental Impact Study and Special Ecological Assessment Study has been drafted on behalf of the Department of Public Works.
This is within the framework of proposed protection and improvement projects stretching from Neo Chorio to Pachyammos area.
The communities/municipalities of Neo Chorio, Polis Chrysochous, Makounta, Argaka, Gialia, Agia Marina, Pomos and Pachyammos fall within this area.
