Relevant News

The Met Office has issued a yellow alert for Monday warning of isolated heavy thunderstorms while the fire service is on alert after yesterday’s heavy rain and flooding in Nicosia.

In issuing its thunderstorm warning on Monday morning, the Met Office said that the rate of precipitation will be between 35 and 55 millimetres per hour while hail is also likely.

The yellow alert is in force from 7 am to 5 pm on  Monday. The public should be aware that thunderstorms may occur. “Take extra care in exposed areas, like mountains, forest and open terrain. Disruption to outdoor activities is possible,” it added.

The fire service yesterday responded to more than 180 calls for help in Nicosia to free people trapped in cars, pump water from flooded streets and move fallen trees after heavy rain and hail pounded the capital. The old city, Strovolos, Engomi and Aglandjia were particularly badly affected.

Authorities are on alert for more extreme weather, CyBC said.

In its weather forecast, the Met Office said that Monday will be cloudy at intervals with local rain and isolated thunderstorms which may be accompanied by hail. Temperatures will rise to 26 C inland and on the coasts and around 15 C in the mountains.

Tonight will become partly cloudy with the possibility of isolated showers, mainly on the coasts. Temperatures will fall to 13 C inland, around 15 C on the coasts and 7 C in the mountains.

On Tuesday, increased local cloud may lead to scattered showers or isolated thunderstorms at midday and early in the afternoon, mainly in the mountains, inland and on the southeast coasts.

Wednesday and Thursday will start off mainly fine, but at midday and early in the afternoon increased local cloud may lead to scattered showers, mainly in the mountains.

Temperatures will edge up until Wednesday remaining at the same levels of Thursday which is above average for the time of year.
