Thousands of buildings should be demolished because of town planning violations-Minister

Bulldozing thousands of buildings in Cyprus because of town planning violations that cannot be fixed is probably the government’s only solution, Interior Minister Nicos Nouris has said.

The violations are such that title deeds cannot be issued, he also told the House Finance Committee on Monday when the 2023 state budget was under review.

Specifically, Nouris said out of the 45,000 title deeds that were pending back in 2015, some 30,000 have been issued but as many as 15,000 are still waiting for approval.”However, a large number of these buildings cannot be granted a title deed (because of the violations) and perhaps the only remedy would be their demolitions,” he added.

Referring to new incentives granted by the government for housing purposes in a bid to support low-income residents, he said three low-lying communities have been described as mountainous ones so as to become eligible because of their special circumstances.

Namely, the communities of Mammari, Denia and Troulloi.

He explained: “These three villages are the only ones located 100% within the buffer zone and they  will be able to join the schemes covering mountainous areas so as to also receive additional benefits.”
