Thick fog, as met office warns of heavy thunderstorms and rain

The met office has issued a yellow alert for Monday, warning of thunderstorms  and heavy rain.

Police meanwhile are warning that there is thick fog in various parts of Cyprus and are urging drivers to be particularly careful because visibility is  extremely limited. Drivers must drive slowly, keep a safe distance from other vehicles and keep their lights on.

The yellow alert is in force from 5 am to 5 pm on Monday. The met office said that heavy thunderstorms are likely with the rain intensity locally exceeding 35 millimeters per hour.

In its forecast for the next few days, the met office said that low pressure is affecting the area and Monday will be mainly cloudy with rain and isolated thunderstorms. Improvement is expected late in the afternoon.

Temperatures will be 18 C inland and on the coasts and around 9 C in the mountains.

Tonight will see periods of mainly fine weather but also intervals of cloud that will lead to isolated showers. Temperatures will fall to 7 C inland, 10 C on the coasts and 3 C in the mountains, where frost is expected.

On Tuesday there will be intervals of mainly fine weather but also periods of cloud that are expected to lead to isolated rain. Late in the afternoon and mainly at night the weather will become mainly cloudy with rain and isolated thunderstorms, while sleet or snow is possible is the higher Troodos peaks later at night. Temperatures will rise to a little above average for the time of year.

Wednesday will be cloudy at intervals with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. Sleet or snow is expected in the higher Troodos peaks. The weather will improve at night. Temperatures will drop but remain to close to average for the time of year.

Thursday will be mainly fine with localised increased cloud at intervals. Temperatures will edge up, remaining close to average for the time of year.
