Coronavirus: There are sufficient quantities of Chloroquine, says Ministry of Health

There are sufficient quantities of Chloroquine to cover possible short-term and long-term needs of patients with chronic diseases and to possibly use it to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Health has announced.

In a statement, it said that with the Minister of Health’s instructions, the Cypriot manufacturer Remedica Ltd has assured that there are sufficient quantities of the medication to cover current and future possible needs.

Part of the quantities have been delivered to the Health Ministry’s Drug Warehouses as a donation from Remedica Ltd, which the Ministry of Health is grateful for, the statement added.

The Ministry further informed the public that the Scientific Advisory Committee, which is made up of 14 different kind of experts, set up to advice the Minister of Health to handle the COVID-19 pandemic, is preparing a protocol for the use of drugs that are used internationally  to handle the coronavirus pandemic.

The protocol will be delivered to the Minister of Health on Friday and will be examined by the Pharmaceutical committee as the competent body to approve drug protocols and the use of medicine in the public sector’s hospitals.

For any serious cases that require the immediate use of any medication used to treat the COVID-19, the attending physicians will have to address the Emergency Situations Committee, appointed by the Council of Ministers which will take decisions immediately.

The Ministry of Health informs the public that it is in constant communication with the World Health Organisation and the European Centre for Disease Control and is monitoring closely all developments in the use of medicines in various clinical trials worldwide which aim to find effective and safe drug treatment for COVID-19.
