The last supermoon of 2020 is tonight

Tonight we will be able to see in the night sky the ‘Full Flower Moon’ symbolising the season that flowers bloom, in what will be the last supermoon for 2020.

Explaining the phenomenon to CNA, President of the Cyprus Astronomical Society Chrysanthos Fakas said that the names ascribed to the different moons come from the USA where the indigenous population used a lunar calendar. They called the moon of May the Flower Moon.

“When it gets dark this evening, we will enjoy a beautiful moon and it’s a good opportunity to also enjoy Venus that also appears at this time after sunset. The moon will be very bright tonight; a supermoon worth experiencing,” Fakas said.

According to NASA, “the term ‘supermoon’ was coined by the astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979 and refers to either a new or full moon that occurs within 90% of perigee, its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit.”

Fakas said that the next lunar event will be on June 5 when a full moon will be observed, which event he said is very important as a lunar eclipse will also occur on the same day.

“This is a beautiful event which will happen four times this year but cannot be observed with the naked eye,” he explained.
