Thalassemia patients’ transfusions postponed on weekly basis, blood donations urgently needed

Relevant News

About 100-120 blood transfusions to thalassemia patients are postponed every week because of shortages and organized patients are calling for urgent visits by those in good health to the island’s blood donation stations.

This is what Philenews reported on Friday, adding that 2000 bottles should have been transferred to thalassemia centres last month but only about 1600 managed to be delivered.

This is what Miltos Miltiadous who heads the Pancyprian Thalassemia Association on Thursday told the House Health Committee before stressing the future for them is bleak.

“A total of 650 people with thalassemia, a total of 650 families, that is, are in suffering. Every postponement turns plans by a person with thalassemia upside down, it creates a negative chain reaction in his/her daily life,” Miltiadous also said.

“A person who has not been transfused may not be able to work properly, he/she cannot carry out planned functions, the whole family gets upset…it is a tragic situation,” he added.
