District officers appoint a total of 10 guards to protect the sand and the beaches year round, Interior Minister Constantinos Petrides has said.
In a reply to a question submitted by Greens MP Yiorgos Perdikis, he said beach ‘guards’ are appointed every year depending on their need — Limassol has two, Paphos four, Nicosia one, Larnaca one and free Famagusta two.
Their job is to patrol the areas and inform the district officer of any illegality or irregularity concerning the Law on the Protection of Beaches.
They have the right to stop and search any mode of transportation to establish whether a criminal offence has been committed.
