The bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage is going ahead with the restoration of a mosque in Orounda in the Nicosia District, and has plans for seven more mosques throughout Cyprus.
Takis Hadjidemetriou, Greek Cypriot Head of the Technical Committee, told CNA that the Committee will initiate tender procedures immediately for the small mosque in Orounda. The project also provides for the restoration of nearby chambers, which were used for instruction in the past.
This was an important monument for Turkish Cypriots from Orounda, Hadjidemetriou said. He added that people from the community are also very keen to see the monument restored, noting that the initiative will send “important messages.”
More plans and designs are underway for seven mosques, located in the communities of Maroni, Kalo Chorio, Agios Theodoros, Lefkara, Avdimou, Alektora and Terra.
Speaking finally about Zouhouri Mosque in Larnaca, Hadjidemetriou said that the Technical Committee will proceed with cleaning the outer surface, in consultation with Larnaca Municipality and the Antiquities Department.
