Supreme Court overturns alleged rape conviction, slams assize court’s verdict

Relevant News

Surprisingly enough, the Supreme Court has not only overturned the conviction of two young men for the alleged rape of a minor two years ago but also slammed the Larnaca-Famagusta assize court’s verdict.

This is what Philenews reported on Tuesday, adding that the Supreme Court last week also called for the immediate release of the two Greek Cypriots.

Aged 20 and 18 at the time of the alleged crime, the two were sentenced in April to five and a half years in prison. The alleged victim was 16 and eight months when she filed the complaint, in August 2020.

What is really noteworthy is that the Supreme Court’s 29-page verdict literally slams the assize court judges – and not only in terms of the way testimony before them was evaluated.

The Supreme Court also pinpointed to a legal error in their decision and described it as an “arbitrary finding”.

Moreover, a contradiction in the ruling of the assize court is also pointed out.
