The creation of student housing within the walled city of Nicosia is on considering that, so far, a total of 25 applications have been submitted by individuals or companies.
These provide for some 315 rooms, Philenews reported on Monday.
At the same time, the Municipality of Nicosia has already pushed forward the creation of two student residences with a total of 70 rooms.
One of the 25 private applications concerns a building in which 42 rooms could be created. And a second one in which 42 rooms could be created.
The third application concerns a building in which 22 rooms could be created.
Taking into account the applications that have been submitted, the smallest hostel will consist of 12 rooms.
So far, no applications have been submitted for the construction of a new building to act as a fire station.
Senior officer in the Department of Town Planning Irini Hadjisavva said the project is on track and every effort is made to examine the applications the soonest possible.
However, she added, security issues may lead to delays even if the applications are examined through the fast-track licensing method.
