Showers and isolated thunderstorms today, unsettled over the weekend

It will be a showery day with some thunderstorms today while the weather will remain unsettled over the weekend.

A yellow alert is in force from 8 am to 6 pm today with the Met Office warning of isolated heavy thunderstorms with rain intensity that may exceed 55 millimetres per hour.

In its early morning weather bulletin, the Met Office said a low pressure system centered on Rhodes was moving east and affecting the area.

Friday will be mainly cloudy with rain and local thunderstorms as well as the possibility of snow in the higher Troodos peaks. Temperatures will be round 13 C inland, around 14 C on the coasts and 4 C in the mountains.

Tonight will be initially mainly cloudy with rain and local thunderstorms and the possibility of snow in the higher Troodos peaks but will gradually improve.

Temperatures will fall to 5 C inland, around 7 C on the coast and 1 C in the mountains. Locally, there will be frost in the mountains.

Saturday and Sunday will be partly cloudy and at intervals mainly cloudy, with scattered showers and the possibility of isolated thunderstorms as well as snow or sleet in the mountains.

Monday will be mainly fine with increased cloud at intervals.

Temperatures will edge up on Saturday remaining at the same levels on Sunday and Monday at close to the seasonal average.

The depth of snow at Troodos Square at the time of issue of the early morning weather bulletin was 43 cm.
