A security guard has described how he saved six people from a burning building in central Nicosia, using a metal stair to evacuate them from the balcony where they had taken refuge after the explosion and fire which led to the death of a 42 year old woman.
Police have made four arrests in connection with the fire early on Wednesday morning at a cafe on Costakis Pantelides Street off Eleftheria Square as they probe a case of arson. One of the four has since been released.
Yiorgos Lazarides was on duty with colleague Vangelis Georgiou at Eleftheria Square when they heard the explosion and quickly rushed to scene while notifying police and the fire service.
He told Radio Active on Monday morning that he had seen six people, four men, a woman and her young daughter on the balcony of the blazing building, shouting for help.
He said a neighbour in the adjoining building had given him access and he quickly went to the roof. From there he was able to use a metal stair so that the six people — all non-Cypriots — could be brought to safety.
He and his colleague work for a private security firm contracted by Nicosia Municipality to guard Eleftheria Square during the revamp.
