After receiving approval by the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection the municipality of Nicosia will install security cameras in Eleftheria Square.
According to Phileleftheros, the cameras will record throughout the day, however, authorities will check their footage only in special circumstances, such as in the event of a crime or vandalism in the square.
The area is currently guarded by a private security company.
The municipality is awaiting the delivery of benches and fountains from Italy, as well as marble to be installed in the square.
Officials said that the the project is expected to be fully completed within the summer.
The latest deadline had been set for May.
