School for the Deaf in Nicosia in dire condition

Relevant News

The “Georgios Markou” School for the Deaf in Nicosia is in a very bad condition, with pieces of concrete falling off the walls even during classes. Storerooms have become classes since there are not enough classrooms.

The organized parents are expressing their indignation and are warning that if the Education Ministry does not respond to their appeals they will proceed with protests.

More specifically, Tasoula Tsigarides, President of the Parents’ Union said that they have repeatedly informed the Ministry about the situation but nothing has been done so far. She noted that in addition to the building’s bad condition, there is a problem of space as well, since the A’ Kindergarten of Makedonitissa is also housed there.

She pointed out that the School for the Deaf in Nicosia is the only one in Cyprus and children from Paphos leave home at 04.00 in the morning in order to attend school in Nicosia.

Andreas Marangos, head of the Education Ministry’s Technical Services said that the School for the Deaf is independent and they do not manage the whole school since part of it is under the school’s administrative council.
