Russian UN Ambassador hopes things to move forward on Cyprus issue

“We were waiting for certain political events” to happen, including the Presidential elections in Turkey, which may give an impetus to the political process to move forward in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, President of the UN Security Council, Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia, has said.

Replying to questions during a press conference on the occasion of the completion of the Russian Presidency, Nebenzia said that on Cyprus “we were waiting for certain political events to happen, including the presidential elections in Turkey, which hopefully will give an impetus to the political process to move forward.”

“A few things were delayed because of the elections not yet been held. I will be contacting my Cypriot and Turkish friends soon and let’s see where we’ll go from here,” he said.

Nebenzia noted that “so far we don’t have anything substantive that is different from what we discussed earlier, but now the environment is – maybe – different and we hope that things would start moving.”
