Russian remanded for burglary, illegal residence

Relevant News

Larnaca District Court on Monday ordered a 32 year old Russian remanded in custody for six days in connection with the burglary of a house in Pyla, as well as being illegally in the Republic.

This follows his arrest on Sunday by police who sped to the scene after they were alerted by neighbours that the burglary alarm had gone off. They also saw a man who was wearing a track suit bottom and was naked from the waist up climbing out of the window. They tried to apprehend him but he fled on foot carrying a rucksack.

Police managed to arrest him after firing a warning shot. They found 350 euro in cash and three necklaces in his possession. They also found his rucksack with a video camera, various watches, jewellery and clothes, which were recognised by the owner of the house as his property.

Immigration police determined that the suspect had arrived in Cyprus as a visitor in the beginning of June and had overstayed his visa since September 1. He reportedly told police that he has been homeless since he arrived in Cyprus.
