Ruling Disy’s presidential election nominee eyes alliances with centre parties

Relevant News

Now that ruling Disy leader Averof Neophytou is the rightwing party’s official nominee for the 2023 presidential elections the bid for alliances with centre political forces begins.

This is what Philenews reported on Tuesday, adding that Neophytou will hold meetings with all parliamentary parties except main opposition leftwing Akel.

On Monday, Neophytou asserted confidently that his party will win and retain power for five more years after filing his candidacy – the only one on the table.

But the road for the 60-year-old politician could be windy, considering that an internal power struggle within the conservative party on their candidate for the upcoming election is already brewing.

And this because party-affiliated Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides is also getting ready to contest the election.

Christodoulides, who has long been viewed as harbouring presidential ambitions, on Sunday announced he had tendered his resignation.

And that he would be ‘interested’ in the presidential election next year but that he was not yet ready to take a definitive decision.

“I will make an announcement when I take my final decisions,” Christodoulides said.

Neohytou who has urged Christodoulides to clarify his intentions using strong words against his potential rival runner repeated his words that the divided island needs a seasoned ‘captain’ behind the wheel.
