The lockdown has led to traffic on some roads on Easter Sunday falling by as much as 96% compared to the previous year, according to figures published in Phileleftheros on Thursday.
Alexis Avgoustis of the public work’s traffic studies unit told Phileleftheros that traffic on the Limassol-Paphos motorway near Mandria was down 96% with traffic counters recording 590 vehicles on Easter Sunday compared to 15,200 on Easter Sunday last year.
On the Larnaca-Paralimni motorway, near the Oroklini the 27,700 vehicles of last year fell by 93% to 1900.
On the Nicosia-Limassol motorway (Nicosia exit) there was a 93% drop in vehicles from 21,710 to 1,560.
On the Limassol exit of the same motorway, the drop was 92%, from 21,800 to 1820.
Finally, on the Limassol ring road at Ayios Athanasios, there was a 89% drop from 48,100 on Easter Sunday to 5200 last Sunday.
Overall, for the five locations, the number of vehicles totalled 11,120 compared to 134,510 on Easter Sunday last year.
As regards central roads in Nicosia, traffic was down between 81% to 86%.
Avgoustis told Phileleftheros that it is unlikely that Cyprus will see such low numbers again, except if under different circumstances all movement is prohibited.
As regards Good Friday, the drop was smaller. On the Limassol ring road at Ayios Athanasios, there was a 86% drop from 58,100 on Easter Sunday to 19,600 last Sunday.
On the Nicosia-Limassol motorway (Nicosia exit) there was a 71% drop in vehicles from 21,800 to 6,330.
On the Limassol exit of the same motorway, the drop was 72%, from 26,200 to 7300.
On the Limassol-Paphos motorway near Mandria was down 79% with traffic counters recording 2850 vehicles on Good Friday compared to 2,8500 on the same day the previous year.
On the Larnaca-Paralimni motorway, near the Oroklini the 27,600 cars of last year fell by 76% to 6700.
In Nicosia, traffic was down between 64%Â and 72%.
