Reduced excise tax on petrol and diesel measure to be extended

The forthcoming presidential elections but also the suspension of the Parliament’s work due to the pre-election campaign led yesterday to the extension of the government’s decision to reduce the excise tax on petrol and diesel.

The initial government bill referred to an extension of the measure until 15 January 2023, however, during the relevant discussion at the House Finance Committee all deputies agreed to implement the measure until the end of February.

The excise tax on petrol will continue to be reduced by 7 cents per litre, by 8.3 cents per litre for diesel, and by 6.4 cents per litre for heating oil.

Despite the deputies’ agreement on the issue, they expressed objections to the issue of rising prices, with AKEL Secretary General Stefanos Stefanou reiterating that due to VAT increases the government has increased its income by 850 million euros.
