Red tape for amputee who has to prove disability

Relevant News

An amputee seeking government financial assistance to buy a disabled accessible vehicle has been asked to appear before a medical council to certify that his leg has indeed been amputated, Phileleftheros reported on Wednesday.

It said that in November 2018, the man applied for an EU card for the disabled and a grant of €3500 for the vehicle.

The card was approved immediately, based on the fact that the applicant already had a vehicle for the disabled which he bought in 2003. The scheme entitles beneficiaries to receive a grant every seven years.

But despite the approval of his card for the disabled, that he was already an owner of a car for the disabled and had submitted all the required documents, the applicant was told he needed to appear before a medical council again so that he disability can be certified.

An official said that customary practice was not to call applicants already certified as disabled back before a medical council, adding that a mistake may have been made.
