Pupils to stage silent protest for climate change outside Parliament

Relevant News

Youth for Climate Cyprus announced that it will stage a protest outside the Parliament building on May 3, 10:30 am to demand stronger action from politicians against climate change.

“Unfortunately, following our previous strike, the parliament did not debate or take any measures against climate change, leaving us no option but to act again,” the group said.

It also criticised the governments’ policies on climate change. “The aims of the Cypriot government for the reduction of greenhouse gases until 2030 remain at 24% and not at 45%, with renewable sources of energy still at 9%. We have submitted a petition containing signatures from 80 scientists and 10 environmental organisations that agree with our demands, but the policy makers of this country continue to ignore science.”

The pupils said that they will meet outside the Parliament building and cover their mouths with a piece of cloth, “without raising our voice again, since it is so blatantly ignored.”

Joining the global “Strike for climate movement”, pupils in Cyprus held their first demonstration against against government inaction on climate change on March 15, outside the Parliament.

Recently, the initiative Mothers Rise Up announced that it will be joining the pupils in protest on May 12, Mother’s Day.

Their demands:

1)The government aligns its targets and policies to meet the greenhouse gas reductions necessary for limiting warming to 1.5°C
2)The government dedicates the necessary resources to achieve the aforementioned targets
3) The strengthening of the education system as regards the climate crisis in the public schools’ curriculum but also the introduction of experiential workshops,
4) For the Government and national decision bodies to take greater action towards eradicating plastic pollution and restoration of polluted ecosystems
5) For action to combat climate change to be taken in a socially just way.
