Protesting prison guards to road-block Pindarou Str for three hours on Monday

Relevant News

Prison guard members of Isotita union who started an indefinite strike two weeks ago over pay grades on Monday will road-block Pindarou Street in Nicosia for three hours.

Pindarou Street is where ruling Disy party’s headquarters are situated and February’s presidential election is clearly the reason behind the protesters’ new move which was decided on Friday.

The protesters accuse the government of breaking promises and keep demanding upgrades to their pay scales as well as additional special allowances.

Isotita has said that a promise was made to them by director general of the justice ministry Louis Panayis on behalf of minister Stefie Drakou to increase their pay grades.

They are also protesting after the finance ministry rejected a request for a special allowance to be paid to prison guards even after it was recommended by the justice ministry.

Isotita had more than 170 prison guards as members out of a total of 350 working in the island’s central prisons but the number is rising as protests continue, according to insiders.
