Fears about further increase of the COVID-19 confirmed cases expressed Dr. Petros Karagiannis, Professor of Microbiology/Molecular Virology at the University of Nicosia Medical School and member of the Advisory Scientific Committee, who added that people are careless and do not respect the self-protection measures.
Asked to comment on yesterday’s negative record number of 457 confirmed cases, Dr. Karagiannis said that it was indeed higher than expected based on the previous days’ totals. However, he said that a lot of rapid tests that needed to be verified had been gathered and that might have added to the number.
Asked whether the Advisory Committee is concerned, he said that if the situation continues like this, of course, they will be concerned.
Asked whether the measures will become stricter he said he does not know whether this is necessary now. He added that the Committee will wait a few days and then decide what to do.
Regarding the beginning of vaccinations on 27 December, he said that Cyprus is ready.
However, he pointed out that the self-protection measures and the implementation of Protocols will continue even after the vaccinations.
