Prison guard members of the ‘Isotita’ union on Monday went on an indefinite strike over the alleged breach of a promise concerning salary upgrades.
Holding placards outside the Justice Ministry in Nicosia saying “Not a step back” the protesters said a promise was made to them and broken.
The promise, they added, was made by the director general of the justice ministry Louis Panayis on behalf of minister Steffie Drakou to upgrade police pay grades.
And that this was broken after the Finance Ministry rejected a request for a special allowance to be paid to prison guards even after it was recommended by the Justice Ministry.
