President to receive UN envoy on Sunday morning

Relevant News

President Nicos Anastasiades will receive the UNSG’s envoy on Cyprus Jane Holl Lute on Sunday morning.

The UN diplomat is expected on the island late this evening to hold talks with Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci in the framework of her consultations with the parties involved in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, with a view to reaching an agreement on the terms of reference that will pave the way for the resumption of the negotiations for a settlement.

According to information from the Turkish occupied part of Cyprus, Lute will probably meet Akinci on Monday. Prior to her meetings with the leaders she is expected to hold a meeting with the UNSG’s Deputy Special Adviser on Cyprus and Special Representative in the island Elizabeth Spehar and the UN team that is dealing with the Cyprus problem, with a view to be briefed about developments since her last visit here at the end of October this year.

Lute met on Thursday in Ankara with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, and on December 12 in New York with the Greek Alternate Foreign Minister George Katrougkalos. Last week she met with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.

Anastasiades is due back from Brussels, where he is attending the European Council, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
