President to meet teachers unions

President Nicos Anastasiades will meet the leadership of the teachers unionsĀ  at 10.15 on Thursday to discuss the easing of the lockdown.

The meeting will also be attended by Education Minister Prodromos Prodromou who will be giving a televised press conference at 2 pm.

Announcing the gradual easing of the lockdown on Wednesday evening, the President said that final year secondary school pupils will return to class on May 11.

He added that announcements as regards other levels of education will be made by the minister.

Pending the reopening of schools, tele-education will continue, he added.

Parents have been given a special allowance to stay home and look after children as schools have closed.

In announcing that public sector workers would return to work on Monday, the president said all employees who have the responsibility of caring for children up to the age of 15 will have the right to be on leave until state and private schools open.

It is understood that during their absence, they are obliged to carry out any duties assigned to them via teleconferencing, he added.

The president will also be holding a meeting on sport on Thursday morning.

Yesterday, Anastasiades said that as of May 4, the use of open space athletic installations will be open to high performance athletes who are included in the records of the Cyprus Olympic Committee.

Training of team sportsĀ will be permitted as from May 18 in open spaces and in accordance with the protocols issued by the Ministry of Health.

It both cases, personal and team sports, the use of changing rooms, gyms or any other indoor installations is prohibited.
