President proposes Stella Kyriakides for European Commission

President Nicos Anastasiades has put forward the name of Disy vice president and MP Stella Kyriakides for the new European Commission, it was officially announced on Friday.

According to a statement from the presidency, Anastasiades contacted European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen yesterday and proposed Kyriakides.

In a written statement, Kyrkiakides thanked the president for the honour and trust he has shown in her by proposing her as Commissioner. The proposal must be approved by the European Commission president and then ratified by the European Parliament.

“As Cyprus’ Commissioner I intend to work to promote and enhance Cyprus in the EU and the EU in Cyprus, defending a Europe of equal opportunities, of gender equality and the protection of human rights and the rule of law,” she said.

“A Europe which is closer to every citizen, inspiring and protecting everyone equally. A Europe of stability and security. A Europe that will effectively tackle the challenges of climate change, the refugee issue, the migration issue, economic inequality, a Europe of technological development that gives vision and hope to our youth. A Europe that will decisively support Cyprus and its just struggle,” she added.

She said she also wanted to welcome the historic decision of the EU leadership for gender equality in key EU positions and the decision of the new European Commission president for gender equality on the new European Commission.

Stella Kyriakides is a member of the Cyprus parliament since 2006 with the party of the Democratic Rally of which she is also Vice President since 2013.

She is Head of the Cyprus Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) since 2012, of which she has served in the positions of President, Vice President, Bureau Member, Committee Chair, Child General Rapporteur, and representative of PACE to the Venice Commission.

She was elected Acting President and is currently serving as Vice President of the European Peoples Party (EPP) in PACE.

She chairs the House of Representatives Committee on Human Rights and Equality, is a member of the Committee of Health, of which she has served in the position of Vice chairperson, and a member of the Committee on External and European Affairs.

She has been very active in the areas of the protection of human rights and health advocacy, both in Europe and in Cyprus, for which she has received a plethora of awards, especially related to her contribution in the area of cancer advocacy.

She is a founding member and President of Europa Donna Cyprus, the Cyprus Breast Cancer Forum and the Miracle Babies Association.

Stella Kyriakides was employed as a psychologist in the Cyprus Mental Health Services from 1979 – 2006.

Cyprus’ Commissioner on the outgoing Commission is Christos Stylianides who holds the Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management portfolio.

Kyreiakides’ seat in the House is expected to be filled by Savvia Orphanidou. The first runner-up in the elections is current government spokesman Prodromos Prodromou who reportedly will not take up the seat. This means it will go to the second runner up.
