President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades will visit Pournara reception centre on Monday before holding a meeting at the Presidential Palace to discuss the situation at the centre.
The President will be accompanied by Ministers of Interior Nicos Nouris, Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Anastasia Anthousi, Maria Stylianou Lottides. Cyprus Ombudsman,Commissioner for Administration and Protection of Human Rights and Despo Michaelidou, Commissioner for Children`s Rights.
A written statement by Government Spokesman Marios Pelecanos on Sunday said the aim of the visit is for the President to see for himself the situation and the living conditions of the immigrants at the centre.
A meeting with government officials will follow at the Presidential Palace.
The living conditions of minors has been criticised recently with interior Minister Nouris stating that despite the great number of people at the centre, exceeding its capacity, the 356 minors have not been denied accommodation and heating. He also said that 90 minors were moved to a hotel in Larnaca, specially rented for this purpose by the Ministry.
