President Nicos Anastasiades visited Pournara reception center this morning accompanied by Ministers of Interior Nicos Nouris, Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Anastasia Anthousi, Maria Stylianou Lottides. Cyprus Ombudsman, Commissioner for Administration and Protection of Human Rights and Despo Michaelidou, Commissioner for Children’s Rights.
In a statement he pointed out that “I have witnessed what is taking place in Pournara. I hope that over the next few hours decisions will be made that will give a way out to the multiple problems.”
He also said that in comparison, Cyprus is first in receiving so many applications for asylum.
According to data from the Interior Ministry, Pournara is meant to host 1,000 people but it currently has 2,541 migrants, including 275 unaccompanied minors.
