Possibility of having new Archbishop without elections

Relevant News

Theologian Theodoros Kyriacou, who has been dealing with the Church of Cyprus for years, said that behind the scene negotiations are taking place that are equal to a church coup.

According to him, the abolition of the elections to choose the new Archbishop has been railroaded. This can be done with a modification of Article 92 of the Church of Cyprus Constitutional Charter by the Holy Synod, by a majority of the ¾ of its members.

Always according to Theodoros Kyriacou, on the basis of this modification, the new Archbishop will be elected directly from the Holy Synod, instead of the citizens electing the three most possible candidates. A member of the Holy Synod, expected to benefit from this change, has undertaken to promote this change of the Constitutional Charter.
