A political controversy has been sparked in the breakaway Turkish-held area of divided Cyprus following a proposal by the Turkish Cypriot leadership there for the name of the ‘state’ to be changed.
Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar wants to replace “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” with “Turkish Republic of Cyprus”, according to Yeni Duzen.
The Turkish Cypriot paper also reported that the Secretary General of the Republican Turkish Party, Asim Akansoi, has slammed Tatar on this proposal.
And that Akansoi believes the Turkish Cypriot community is the founding partner of the Republic of Cyprus and their rights won’t be abandoned.
“The Turkish Cypriot people should decide on the name change,” he is quoted saying.
The overwhelming presence of Turkish settlers in the “TRNC” has long been a divisive issue and the latest controversy is just another example.
Turkey, which maintains thousands of troops in the northern part, has many a times threatened of annexing the occupied areas in full violation of law and order.
