Police warn public over online marketplace scam

Police have warned internet users that cases of fraud are on the rise after receiving several complaints related to online marketplace scams.

Known as refund fraud, the scam takes place on marketplace websites and auction sites, where fraudulent buyers purchase items and then proceed with sending spoof emails as proof of payment transfer to genuine sellers.

In most cases, fraudsters claim that they overpaid and request a refund of the difference from the sellers.
