Police step up patrols for August 15 holiday

Police will be out in force in view of the August 15 holiday with the aim of averting accidents and facilitating motorists, spokesman Andreas Angelides told the Cyprus News Agency on Tuesday.

He said special emphasis will be given to motorways and the secondary road network with patrol cars and police on motorbikes.

Traffic police will also be out in numbers in coastal areas and the mountains.

He urged drivers to abide by the traffic code, to check that their vehicle is in a good condition, to keep a safe distance from other cars, adhere to the speed limit and for all passengers to wear seat belts. All drivers should ensure they do not consume alcohol above the legal limit and bikers must wear a helmet, he added.

According to the latest figures, in the three days from August 10 to 13, police carried out 1285 alco-tests, and booked 164 drivers for being over the limit.

Another 1292 drivers were booked for speeding, 132 for not wearing a seat belt and 65 bikers were booked for not wearing a helmet.
