Police probing premeditated murder after house fire

Relevant News

A 21 year old man is due to appear before Larnaca Court on Wednesday to be remanded in custody as a suspect for the premeditated murder of 75 year old Yiorgos Mavrommatis who was found dead after a house fire on Sunday.

Police said that an investigation into the fire had developed into a murder inquiry. They said that the 21 year old, who was in custody in connection with the theft of an old woman’s handbag earlier on Sunday, had reportedly confessed to killing Mavrommatis during a botched robbery.

Mavrommatis’ burnt body was found in the bedroom by fire fighters called to the scene by neighbours who spotted the fire at his Larnaca home.

But a post-mortem held on Tuesday showed that he had died before the fire from injuries, including broken ribs.

Police said that an elderly woman had reported to police that a young man had stolen her handbag as she was walking near her house in Larnaca on Sunday.

Based on testimony, the suspect was arrested and during questioning reportedly admitted to robbing the old woman.

He also said he had gone into Mavrommatis’ house to rob him but that he killed him when the victim resisted and started the fire in order to cover his traces.
