No evidencehas been uncovered so far that involve Cyprus in the Belgian football corruption scandal, Police Spokesman Andreas Angelides said on Thursday.
Angelides was invited to talk to ACTIVE radio following the October 10 arrest of a 52 year-old Bosnian resident of Cyprus in connection to the scandal.
If new evidence come up, “we will talk with investigators, Belgian authorities and the Law Office of the Republic,” he said.
According to Angelides, the suspect will be led to court to be extradited to Belgium.
Yesterday, police raided four premises and company offices in Nicosia and the Famagusta district. A large number of documents were seized, as well as four computers, two laptops and two Ipads.
Two Belgian investigators who are in Cyprus especially for this purpose also participated in the raids.
Meanwhile, in Belgium, investigators questioned the country’s most influential soccer agent Mogi Bayat on Thursday, a day after he and senior figures in Belgian football were detained on suspicion of financial fraud and possible match-fixing.
On Wednesday, October 9, Belgian police raided 44 Belgian clubs and residences across the country, while a further 13 searches took place in France, Luxembourg, Cyprus, Montenegro, Serbia and FYROM.
Belgian courts will decide whether or not to charge some 25 people, including the coach of champions Club Bruges, the former general manager of Anderlecht, referees and other officials. Some could be kept in custody.
Three months after the Belgian national side reached the World Cup semi-finals, the news indicating uncomfortably close ties between agents, soccer officials and referees are dominating Belgian media.
