Police launch inquiry into death of baby boy from pneumonia

Limassol police have started inquiries after the family of a 20 year old boy who died  of pneumonia earlier this week filed a complaint of medical negligence.

Limassol police deputy spokesman Marinos Vassiliou said that CID officers have started taking statements from doctors and other involved parties while the Health Ministry has been asked to appoint a health official to the investigation as is customary in these cases.

Vassiliou said that the complaint was not directed at a specific individuals or doctors but sought a probe into the conditions of the infant’s death.

Once statements have been taken and all the documentation collected, the case will be referred to the attorney  general’s office for instructions, he added.

The 20 month old baby boy was taken to Limassol Hospital by a private paediatrician on Sunday night and from there to Makarios Hospital in Nicosia where he died a few hours later.

An autopsy was conducted on Wednesday by state pathologist Angeliki Papeta, attended also by pPathologist Marios Matsakis on behalf of the family.

Papeta said that the death was likely caused by septic pneumonia. She added that further lab examinations will determine which virus caused the symptoms.

On his part, Matsakis told Active radio on Thursday that he believed the death was caused by complications of the influenza A virus and did not rule out medical negligence.
