Police are concerned that the public is slacking in its compliance with restrictions to curb the spread of coronavirus, police chief Kypros Michaelides said on Sunday.
He was speaking a day before the first step in the relaxation in the lockdown. Αs from tomorrow, police, assisted by public and municipal employees will need to turn their attention to the 25,000 retail shops and construction sites which get back to work with strict regulations while continuing to monitor ‘movements by exception’ of the general public which from tomorrow rise to three from the current once a day.
In statements after inspecting police patrols in the free Famagusta area, Michaelides said police were stepping up their checks to safeguard public order and health.
This effort was taking up most of police’s time and resources in order to contain the spread of coronavirus, he said.
He said he was ‘fully satisfied’ with the presence of police on the roads in the wider Famagusta area.
On the first step in the relaxation of measures which starts tomorrow, he said police would do its best to be effective.
Officials from various ministries and traffic wardens from the municipalities will be joining police checks on shops, retail trade and beaches, he added.
Asked to comment that members of the public were beginning to slacken in their compliance, the police chief said this was certainly a concern.
