Police chief calls urgent meeting to discuss road fatalities

Police chief Kypros Michaelides has called an urgent meeting of all district traffic heads for noon today following a spate of fatal accidents in recent days.

Seven people have lost their life on the island’s roads in 10 days. A total of 29 people have been killed in traffic accidents since the start of the year. This compares to 30 lives lost in the period of January 1 to August 21, 2018. The death toll for 2018 was 53.

Yesterday police issued an urgent plea to all road users, calling for a change of mentality.

“We must change mindset, culture and mentality as regards our behaviour on the road and the way we look at driving more generally,” police said.

Traffic chief Yiannis Georgiou told CyBC on Monday morning that police have increased their presence on the roads and hundreds of drivers were booked over the weekend .

“Police cannot be everywhere. It is essential for road users to change their mentality,” he said.

Today’s meeting will review campaigns to prevent serious and fatal road accidents and what should be done to develop best practices.
