Police arrests man on suspicion of assisting third-country nationals enter the Republic

Police yesterday, arrested a 64 year-old man on suspicion of assisting third-country nationals to enter Republic of Cyprus-controlled areas.

According to a Cyprus Police statement, at around 3:30 am on October 23, police spotted a vehicle trying to enter Republic of Cyprus-controlled areas through Astromeritis checkpoint.

There were four passengers  aged 56, 44, 38 and 21 in the car, which was driven by the suspect, who is a permanent resident of Cyprus.

Officers who searched the car, arrested the 64 year-old man on suspicion of assisting the people to enter Republic of Cyprus-controlled areas and confiscated two mobile phones.

The four people were not allowed to cross the checkpoint as they did not give adequate explanations for the reason of their presence in Cyprus, the police statement said.

The 64 year-old man was remanded in custody for five days by Nicosia District Court.

Police investigations continue.
